The other day while I was out harvesting fresh cut flowers here at our Cape May flower farm, I had The Joe Gardener Show podcast playing in my earbuds. Episode 431 caught my attention. Joe was talking with Debra Prinzing, founder of the Slow Flowers Society, and Xenia D’Ambrosi, a flower farmer who grows just like we do here in Cape May.

I’ll be honest, sometimes podcasts play in the background while I work and I only half-listen. But this one had me stopping mid-row to actually jot down a note. The way they talked about flowers, their stories, the connection between farmer and flower lover, and how local blooms matter reminded me exactly why I started this Cape May farmer-florist journey in the first place.

And it made me realize: the very things they were talking about are happening right here every day. The heart of “slow flowers” is woven into mornings like this one…

🌼 A Morning on the Cape May Flower Farm

Just the other morning, I was out in the field right after sunrise. The air was cool, the grass still damp, and the dahlias were sparkling with dew. I was cutting stems for that day’s bouquets when a monarch butterfly landed on a zinnia right next to me.

I just stood there for a moment, snips in hand, taking it all in. That little scene-the butterfly, the bloom, the sunrise-is exactly what slow flowers feel like.

These flowers aren’t rushed. They aren’t shipped in boxes across an ocean. They aren’t disconnected from the world around them. Instead, they’re rooted right here in Cape May soil, buzzing with local pollinators, and moving in rhythm with the seasons.

That’s what I want every bouquet of fresh cut flowers from our Cape May flower farm to carry with it: the story of where it came from.

🌸 What Are “Slow Flowers,” Anyway?

If you’re familiar with the slow food movement, it’s the same idea, only with flowers. Instead of imported roses that travel thousands of miles, are picked weeks before they bloom, and are wrapped in layers of plastic… slow flowers are:

✨ Local. Grown right here at our Cape May flower farm, not shipped from halfway around the world.
✨ Seasonal. What’s blooming in April looks completely different from August, and that’s part of the magic.
✨ Sustainable. Grown with care for the soil, pollinators, and people, without heavy chemical sprays or hidden environmental costs.

The result? Bouquets that last longer, look fresher, and, if you ask me, flowers that feel and look more joyful because they come with a story and have not had their souls bred out of them.

🌱 How You’re Already Part of the Slow Flower Movement

Here’s the thing: if you’ve ever taken home one of our bouquets, signed up for a flower subscription, or planted our bulbs, you’re already part of this movement.

  • Subscriptions: Every bouquet is harvested either that morning or the prior evening, lush, hand-tied, and ready for your vase. Plus, they include unique blooms you won’t find at grocery stores.

  • Our corms and bulbs (like ranunculus and tulips) are another way you can join in. By planting this fall, you’re creating your own little patch of slow flowers in your backyard. Imagine walking outside next spring to snip a few stems for your own kitchen table. It doesn’t get more local than that.

  • Flower Stand Visits: Even just stopping by to grab a bouquet means you’re choosing flowers that didn’t need a passport, a plane ride, or a chemical bath to get to you

💐 Why Local Flowers Matter

Hearing Debra and Xenia talk reminded me that slow flowers aren’t just about pretty blooms in a vase, they’re about values. Choosing local, seasonal flowers means:

  • Supporting flower farmers who care for their land and community.

  • Giving pollinators a safe, chemical-free home.

  • Enjoying flowers that are vibrant, fresh, and perfectly in season.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about connection. And that’s something a mass-produced grocery store bouquet just can’t give you.
