I like to hang my laundry outside to dry all year long.

The only time I don’t is when the temps dip below freezing, because I prefer my pants soft, not frozen solid.

There’s just something about that fresh, sun-dried smell that no dryer sheet has ever been able to imitate.

My mom used to do the same.

One winter, she hung the clothes out when it was so cold that everything froze stiff.

I can still picture the jeans standing at attention on the line like little denim soldiers.

We had to bring them inside like that, one by one, crackling as they thawed.

But that wasn’t even the best part of her laundry routine.

Every week (without fail) she washed the sheets, dried them outside, then made her own liquid starch.

She’d spray it on, fold the sheets (this was before pre-fitted-sheet era, mind you), cover them with a towel, and then, this is the kicker, she’d walk on them.

Back and forth, after that, she’d spread the sheets out inside to dry the leftover dampness from the starch.

I don’t know if that was standard practice in Korea or just one of my mom’s personal innovations, but wow.

I can barely get myself to iron a shirt, let alone take a few laps for wrinkle removal.

Still, I’ll admit, there’s nothing quite like crawling into a bed with clean, crisp, sun-dried sheets.

Maybe that’s why I keep hanging mine outside year-round. Every time I do, I think of her (minus the homemade starch and sheet-stepping workout).

How about you? Do you hang your laundry outside too?

Did your mom (or grandma, or aunt) have any “unique” household habits growing up, things that make you shake your head now, but secretly miss?

Hit reply and share; I’d love to hear your stories.

Farm Happenings
The mums are still showing off like they’re auditioning for a floral pageant (they clearly didn’t get the memo that it’s mid-November). The tulip bulbs are nearly all sorted, and I got word today that the last variety, Affaire, shipped so I should be receiving them in a day or two. Those of you who ordered Affaire will get an email from me soon on pick up information.
