The arrival of Valentine’s Day wasn’t just about flowers and chocolates—it signaled a big shift on the farm! The days are getting longer (finally!), and I’m diving into seed sowing and planting —both for veggies and, of course, all the beautiful flowers.

From now until the summer solstice, we get a little more daylight each day, and the plants definitely notice. Some are already waking up from their winter nap, buds are starting to peek out, and while the cold is still hanging on for dear life, spring is definitely on the way.

Here in Cape May, I’m cautiously optimistic (knocking on wood as I type this) that we’ve got just one more week of below-freezing overnight temps. That means it’s almost time to move my baby seedlings for good into the hoop house—no more back-and-forth shuffling them from the seed room to outside for hardening off. My back is already thanking me.

The best part? Spring flowers are on their way!

Every day, more daffodils poke through the soil, and my Lenten roses are just about ready to show off. And while the anemones and ranunculus are still hanging out, waiting for warmer days, I know that once the temps rise, they’ll take off overnight. It never fails to amaze me how fast these beauties grow when they’re ready.

Now that we’re halfway through February, I’m wrapping up my succession sowing of cool flowers (those that thrive in chilly temps) and shifting gears to summer flower planning. In just a few weeks—March!—I’ll be starting zinnia and sunflower seeds. Wild to think about, right?

Spring with all its beautiful flowers is coming, and I couldn’t be more excited!
