I don’t know exactly when it happened, but somewhere along the way, my kids quietly took over the driver’s seat.
Not figuratively.
Literally.
Whenever we go anywhere together now, they’re the ones driving. There isn’t even a discussion about it anymore. They grab the keys, I climb into the passenger seat, and off we go.
When they were little, I used to notice families driving down the highway with Mom or Dad sitting in the passenger seat while one of the kids drove. I remember thinking how strange that must feel.
Now it’s us.
Sure, the occasional ache or pain reminds me I’m getting older, but this?
This is the moment that really gets me.
It’s the realization that your children have become fully capable adults. They don’t need you to drive anymore. In fact, they naturally assume the role without anyone saying a word.
It’s a bittersweet milestone.
As a parent, you spend years teaching them how to navigate the world, and then one day you realize … they’re navigating just fine without you.
That thought has been on my mind this week as I’ve walked through the flower fields.
The farm has its own version of this.
Every season, there comes a point when I have to let go of one crop so another can take its place. The spring flowers that I babied through the winter have long finished blooming.
Their job is done.
Now the zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, and dahlias are taking center stage.
It’s easy to wish we could hold onto what came before just a little longer. But that’s not how nature works.
Every season prepares the next one.
Maybe that’s one of the lessons both parenting and farming keep trying to teach me. Our job isn’t to stay in control forever. It’s to nurture, guide, and prepare for the day when something—or someone—else is ready to take the lead.
I may not be ready to surrender the driver’s seat emotionally…
…but I have to admit, it is kind of nice not having to concentrate on traffic anymore.
For those of you with adult children, what was the moment you realized they had quietly taken the torch? I’d love to hear your story.
